Rethinking Global Inequality
Virtually everyone supports some conception of equality whether it is equal rights, equality of opportunity or material equality. This seminar will examine how best to understand inequality in a global context. Does the existence of vast global inequalities suggest that economic growth should be restrained to stop incomes diverging still further? Or is it wrong to see inequality primarily in economic terms? Influential approaches such as the United Nations’ notion of “human development” and Amartya Sen’s “capabilities” move away from a material understanding of inequality. But do non-material approaches provide a satisfactory solution to the problem?
