Digital technology and infrastructure are penetrating ever further into areas of city life: in obvious ways such as transport ticketing systems through to more covert ways such as data gathering and monitoring.

But as these forces are harnessed and shaped by policy-makers and large tech companies in pursuit of the ‘smart city’, should we wonder about the role of democracy and public engagement?

In this research seminar, researchers at the Eco-Cities Initiative, Rob Cowley, Youri Dayot and Simon Joss will be presenting a paper on The ‘Smart City’ and its Publics.
