The Day of the Dead is a Mexican celebration known across the world. This activity provides the opportunity to learn more about this special day, and also to learn about what it means to be Mexican-British on such an important date. The artist José Sherwood González will show us his comic about family, myths, and Mexican identity, and there will then be the opportunity to enjoy some traditional Mexican food eaten on the Day of the Dead – pan de muertos – and to contribute to an altar to honour those who have already departed from this world.

The film La Llorona - nominated for an Oscar in 2019 - is an exploration of the memory of the Guatemalan genocide of indigenous communities.

This film takes us to Guatemala where Alma, an indigenous woman, is killed alongside her children by the military government during a period of genocide. Thirty years later, when the Coronel in charge of the genocide goes to court, Alma emerges in his house to judge him. An introduction on the legend of la Llorona and on the Guatemalan genocide will precede the film screening.
