Chantal Mouffe, Professor of Political Theory at the Centre for the Study of Democracy, will present the first Social Science and Humanities Distinguished Faculty Lecture on 'The Role of Affects in Agonistic Politics'.
There is much talk today about the need for social sciences to acknowledge the role of 'emotions' and 'affects'. But no agreement exists about how to conceive them. In this lecture, taking her bearings from Freud and Spinoza, Chantal Mouffe will delineate her position in the current debate and clarify what she understands by 'passions' and their crucial role in politics.
