London Gallery West is delighted to present Lisa and John by photographer David Moore, who has spent three years revising a body of work he made in the late 1980s, ‘Pictures from the Real World, Colour Photographs’ 1987–88 [photographs of working class communities in Derby]. The Lisa and John project critically reassesses the work through collaboration with the families photographed in the series, in what Moore terms as an ‘archive intervention’.
The exhibition is one of several discursive outcomes offered by this multi-stranded project, and draws from the full archive of photographs made of one family. Intrigued by the notion of returning photographs to the contexts from which they came, in 2016 Moore invited Lisa and John, since divorced, to make separate selections from the archive; challenging the presence and authority of the original works via the production of a new body of work where the former subjects step into the production space.
Theatrical maquettes show the photographer at the scene, making key photographs from the original series, and underline the themes of display and performativity underpinning the work. A two-screen choreographed projection of Lisa and John's selections, with audio, is presented in the annexe. Moore has also developed a stage play in which actors play Lisa and John discussing memories, family, and being photographed. Two performances are hosted at Regent Street Cinema in conjunction with the exhibition.
Lisa and John explores new possibilities of documentary observation, drawing on histories of installation art, participatory practice, archive intervention, theatre and photography to create new work. Playing on the observer/spectator/subject axis, the various outcomes create a dialogue posing questions around the production of knowledge through photography.
