The concept of ‘polycentric governance’ has become widely discussed and applied in research on environmental governance. This talk will reflect on the meaning of polycentricity, and how the concept has been used by some market liberal scholars to develop a critique of global governance institutions, notably in relation to climate change governance.

The rich set of concepts and questions provided by polycentricity theory will be highlighted. However, it will be argued, research building upon these contributions does not necessarily entail the deep scepticism about global climate governance articulated by some market liberal theorists.
