Westminster’s Basketball and Volleyball teams battled it out against other universities for the first time in The Den, the University’s new sports hall on Harrow Campus.

On 24 January, Westminster colleagues and students gathered at The Den to watch Westminster’s Basketball and Volleyball first teams take on other universities as part of the British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) competition. This was the very first opportunity for spectators to come and explore the new sports hall and gym.

The afternoon of sport kicked off at 1:30pm with a friendly basketball game where Westminster’s Dragon teams played against each other. This was followed by Westminster Women’s Volleyball team battling against Kent and the day concluded with Westminster Men’s Volleyball team coming against Brunel.

The new space includes a new gym, facilities for court sports – including volleyball, basketball, netball and badminton – and a spectator area for up to 180 people. The sports hall will be available to all students and colleagues to use and will provide space for Westminster Dragons sports teams to further grow and flourish.

Developing the new space is part of the University’s commitment to supporting the wellbeing of students and colleagues. Student engagement in our sports clubs and societies has grown dramatically, particularly over the last year, with more than 10,000 members now active.

Ben McDonald, Sports Operations Coordinator at the University of Westminster Students' Union, said: “This new, one of its kind, state of the art sport facility will take sport at Westminster to a whole new level. Not only for our sports clubs and athletes on the elite athlete program, but also the wider participation sport programme for all students. The University of Westminster Students' Union and the University of Westminster can't wait to welcome everyone to our new space. Yesterday demonstrated how transformational this space will be for the student experience.”
