The Language Conversation Scheme (LCS) 2026-2027 is launching its first round of applications – and whether you want to practise a language or support others as a mentor, this is your chance to get involved.
What Is the Language Conversation Scheme?
The LCS connects fluent speakers with learners for weekly conversation practice. It’s a relaxed, friendly way to build confidence, improve fluency, and share culture through real, meaningful language practice.
How to get involved?
We offer two ways to participate:
Volunteer as a Language Mentor
If you’re fluent in a language, your skills can make a real difference. Mentors offer at least one hour of conversation practice per week (term time only), helping learners grow in a supportive one‑to‑one setting.
As a volunteer, you will:
- Support someone’s language development through personalised conversation
- Share your culture and lived experience
- Connect with Westminster’s multilingual community
- Strengthen your CV with communication, teaching, and leadership experience
- Earn 30 points toward the Westminster Award
Volunteer as a Language Learner
As a learner, you will:
- Practise your language skills with a fluent speaker at no cost
- Receive personalised, one-on-one practice sessions tailored to your needs.
- Improve your fluency, pronunciation, and cultural understanding
- Join a supportive, multicultural learning community
If you’re studying a language and want to improve your speaking skills, this scheme is for you. Learners are paired with fluent speakers for 30 minutes of weekly conversation practice.

What languages are available?
Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish
When does it run?
The 2026-2027 scheme begins in Semester 1, Learning Week 3 (the week commencing 5 October) and runs until the end of Semester 2.
Where do the sessions take place?
Most sessions are held online via Microsoft Teams – all you need is a device with a microphone and camera. In-person meetings on campus can also be arranged if both participants prefer.
Who can apply?
The scheme is open to all members of the Westminster community, with priority given to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
