Westminster is introducing food waste bins to cafes on campus to improve recycling rates.

New food waste bins are being introduced to cafes and refectories on campus to minimise the volume of rubbish going to general waste.
General waste at Westminster goes to incineration, which releases emissions to the atmosphere. Instead, food waste goes to anaerobic digestion, where organic matter is broken down to produce biogas, a renewable fuel, which is fed to the National Grid for energy. This is a better alternative for the environment.
Please only put the following foods in the food waste bin and help us keep the bin clean and tidy. If you have any issues using the bins, please report to the campus teams.
What can go in the food waste bin?
- All uneaten food
- Baked goods, e.g. bread, cakes
- Dairy products, eggs and eggshells
- Fruit and vegetables, including raw and cooked vegetables and peel
- Out-of-date or mouldy food
- Raw and cooked meat or fish
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
What can't go in the food waste bin?
- Liquids, e.g. milk
- Non-food products, e.g. plastic
- Any packaging
