Google Sites was introduced as part of the Google Suite in 2008. The app enables colleagues and students to create a wide range of websites for collaborative groups and projects and to date, there are currently over 13,000 University websites. In 2017, Google launched a new, updated platform to replace the original app (Google Classic Sites).

Google have just announced that Google Classic Sites will be phased out by December 2021. All existing Classic Sites will need to be migrated to the new Google Sites app by June 2021 for the start of term to avoid disruption to teaching activities and to allow time for any issues to be resolved.

What does this mean for me?

If you are an owner (administrator) of an active site, you will need to migrate your site’s contents to the new Google Sites format to avoid disruption for collaborators and viewers. We recommend you migrate your site as soon as possible. Site owners also need to ensure that the site complies with Digital Accessibility guidelines.

There are a number of sites that do not have an owner actively managing the site. From 1 July, inactive sites will no longer be available. Please contact the IT Service Desk if you require access to an inactive site.

Digital Accessibility

The University is committed to ensuring that all websites and content we publish are available to everyone to improve the experience for all users, as well as making sure that individuals with disabilities can gain equal access. It is the site owner’s responsibility to ensure that the site is digitally accessible.

Site owners are required to include a link to the University of Westminster Accessibility Statement for Websites on the Google Sites Domain on the site.
