What have students spent the funding on?

Schnieder, from the School of Life Sciences, received £200 to register for the ECSMID microbiology conference:

"It provided an opportunity to engage with current research in microbiology and antimicrobial resistance, and connect with researchers working in related areas."

Daniella, from the School of Social Sciences, received £498 for a political science conference, itemised: £20 society membership, £118 registration, £252 hotel, £72 train travel:

"It introduced me to important researchers whose work I plan to read and cite in my dissertation, and I met other early-career researchers who shared their experiences with me."

Saqlain, from the School of Computer Science and Engineering, received £1,400 for Microsoft Azure and cloud security exam vouchers, a red team bootcamp, and study materials:

"AZ-104 and CCSK are two of the most requested qualifications in cloud security job postings in the UK. Having both puts me ahead of a lot of candidates at the same level."

What can you get funding for?

If money is the only thing between you and something that will make you better at what you do, the fund is for you.  

You can receive funding for:

• Purchasing new equipment
• Training opportunities
• Costs associated with starting your own business
• Developing a project relevant to your studies, such as making a documentary film, setting up a music studio or dissertation projects
• External courses related to your degree, which will give you the edge once you graduate
• Research projects
• Internships and training opportunities
• Attending conferences and workshops
• Software suites

Who can apply and how to do so?

Any current Westminster undergraduate or postgraduate student (from any year, any course, full-time or part-time) can apply.

On the application form, you'll be asked what you want to do, what it will cost, and why it matters to you. A clear, specific plan beats a polished one. Break your costs down: the strongest applications say "£118 registration, £252 accommodation, £72 travel", not "roughly £500 for a conference".
