October is Cyber Security Awareness Month. This week, we're looking at the few simple steps you can take to keep your data secure.

Cyber security doesn't stop at phishing, passwords or AI. The everyday choices you make can help protect your University account, devices and information.
Remember: small actions can make a big difference.
Taking a few simple steps can reduce your risk and keep your data secure:
Keep your devices secure
Your laptop and phone give you access to important University services and information. Keep them protected by:
- Installing security updates when they become available
- Locking your screen when you step away
- Using a strong PIN, password or biometric security
- Never leaving your device unattended
Protect your important files
Losing a device shouldn't mean losing your work:
- Save and back up important files to your University OneDrive
- Keep important files backed up so you can recover them if the original is lost or damaged
Think before you connect
Public Wi-Fi can be convenient, but not every network is trustworthy:
- Check you're connecting to the correct network
- Avoid unfamiliar or suspicious Wi-Fi
- Use trusted University networks where available (Eduroam, Corporate Wi-Fi)
- Be cautious when accessing sensitive information
Think before you share
Sharing updates, photos and personal details on social media can reveal more about you than you realise. Scammers can use this information to make their messages more convincing, steal personal details or trick you into visiting malicious websites.
Protect yourself by:
- Reviewing your social media privacy settings
- Being careful about what you share publicly or with AI tools
- Avoiding posts that reveal sensitive personal/University information
- Only accepting connections you trust
