Celebrating the joy and supporting our community during Ramadan

The University of Westminster wishes Ramadan Mubarak to all our students, colleagues, alumni and friends celebrating.

Ramadan also spelled Ramadhan, Ramazan, Ramathan or Ramzan, occurs on the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar, and marks the month the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammed. The celebration is observed by Muslims worldwide and comprises of fasting, prayer, reflection and community.

This year, depending on the moon sighting, Ramadan may begin on either the evenings of 17 or 18 February and expected to end on Thursday 19 March as Friday 20 March is likely the day marked for Eid ul-fitr, meaning festival of end of the fast (day begins at sunset the evening before).

Support for students during Ramadan

At Westminster, we are committed to supporting our Muslim students throughout this spiritual time and ensuring their wellbeing.

We understand that Ramadan can present unique challenges, especially with academic commitments and timetabled activities. If you would like to discuss this, please reach out to your personal tutors, module leaders or the Student Centre. We aim to be as accommodating as possible while maintaining a balance between academic responsibilities and religious observance.

For those who require time during activities at sunset to break their fast and pray, please inform your tutor with as much advance notice as possible, so that arrangements can be managed. We encourage open communication to ensure that your needs are considered in a respectful and understanding manner.

Additionally, we have a range of resources and support services available to help you through this period. Please visit the following Student Hub pages for more information on what's available:

If you have any specific questions or concerns about religions observance at the University, feel free to reach out to our Interfaith Adviser, Yusuf Kaplan, at [email protected] anytime.
