Students involved in the University’s Social Media Ambassador scheme have the chance to get trained in creating engaging social media content and news stories about life as a Westminster student, and gain valuable paid work experience in the flexible part-time role.

Last year, 30 Westminster students got involved with the scheme, creating content for the University’s social media platforms including Instagram and TikTok, with one video, created by Business Management (Marketing) BA Honours student Tamera De Agrela, reaching  1.8 million views. They also had the opportunity to represent Westminster on an Instagram story takeover for Study UK, an organisation that offers information and insight about education in the UK for international students who may be considering coming to the UK to study.

During her time as an ambassador, Tamera has created content showing off Westminster’s campuses, informing current and prospective students on what to expect when studying at the University and highlighting the costs of living in London, types of transport and things to do across the capital.

About the scheme she said: “Becoming a Social Media Ambassador is definitely something to think about - it’s fun, on your own terms, pushes you out of your comfort zone and makes you feel like you’re a part of a community whilst gaining work experience. Joining the scheme is one of the best choices I’ve made so far since coming to Westminster.”

Another student involved this year was Cyber Security & Forensics MSc student Felix Fomengia Atabonglefac. As an ambassador, he created numerous pieces of content that featured on the University’s social media channels. His first one was an Instagram reel called Life in London as a Chevening Scholar at the University of Westminster, where he revealed what his life was like at Westminster, from attending lectures and meeting course mates, to exploring the libraries and the capital itself. The video got over 1000 reactions and over 24,000 views on Instagram, inspiring many potential applicants to apply for the scholarship that Felix himself received.

Felix also showcased the resources and facilities his course has to offer in his Instagram reel called Studying Cybersecurity & Forensics at the University of Westminster: A tour of our labs, environment and resources.

About the experience Felix said: “It was an honour as an ambassador to share information about our Cavendish Campus facilities, computer laboratories, UWShop and innovation centre and to represent the University for the Instagram Story Takeover with StudyUK. @studyuk_international has over 94k followers, and today, this story is archived on their channels.”

Milly Gilmore, Social Media Manager at the University and organiser of the scheme, said: “Students on the Social Media Ambassador scheme not only develop their skills in content creation but also learn to navigate the dynamic landscape of social media and content creation - a skillset crucial for many of today’s graduates. I think it’s important to bring students from across the University into the conversation about what we create and share on social media. Our Social Media Ambassadors are the voice of our TikTok. They show our online community what life at Westminster is really like. It is more than a part-time role alongside studying; the scheme empowers students to become adaptable, forward-thinking, creative and ready to excel in any modern workplace.”

Felix added: “It’s a wonderful opportunity not to miss. Imagine being paid to share your university journey and life as a student!”

The role is open to all students from all courses and levels who have right to work in the UK. Applications will close on Friday 29 September, with onboarding sessions starting Tuesday 10 October.
