The University of Westminster wishes a very happy Lunar New Year to all students, colleagues, alumni and friends who are celebrating on Tuesday 17 February.

Lunar New Year is an annual festival that marks the beginning of the new year on the traditional lunisolar calendar. This calendar is used across a number of Asian countries and regions, including China, Vietnam, Korea, Singapore and Malaysia, and the festival is widely recognised as one of the most important cultural celebrations of the year.
Animals of the zodiac
Each Lunar New Year is associated with one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, which carry across a twelve-month period. 2026 marks the Year of the Horse, a symbol of energy, resilience and progress.
Reflecting Lunar New Year
The term “Lunar New Year” is used to reflect the diverse cultures and communities who celebrate this festival across East and Southeast Asia and within the global diaspora. While traditions and names may vary such as Tết in Vietnam or Seollal in Korea, all share a connection to the lunisolar calendar and a spirit of renewal, reunion and hope. By using “Lunar New Year,” the University aims to recognise and celebrate this diversity in an inclusive and respectful way.
