The construction industry has become increasingly reliant on workers from the rest of the EU because of a lack of skills training, a new publication warns.

Professor Linda Clarke has contributed to a book ‘Who Needs Migrant Workers?: labour shortages, immigration and public policy’, published by Oxford University Press, which is receiving a lot of publicity and is to be launched at the House of Lords on 2 November.

The book is the product of research, coordinated by the ESRC Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) of the University of Oxford, which Linda was involved in, together with colleagues at the Universities of Loughborough and Manchester, and which resulted in the book chapter ‘The Dynamics of Migrant Employment in Construction: can supply ever match demand?’. Linda’s recent Comment column in the Guardian (26 October 2010) drew partly on this research.
