The Making the Case prize is sponsored by the Tourism Society and is awarded annually by the Association of Tourism in Higher Education (ATHE) to reward innovative teaching activities that build leadership and management capacity in the visitor economy.
The 2017 prize was awarded to the University of Westminster’s field trip to Light Night Leeds. This trip was designed to give students direct experience of an event that plays a significant role in boosting the visitor economy. As well as hearing from a range of high profile experts, students attended Light Night, conducted an official evaluation of the event and were given the opportunity to participate in the carnival parade. This participatory dimension gave students unique insight into the way events are planned and managed and how they help to progress wider tourism and urban policies.
Dr Andrew Smith, Reader in Tourism and Events, will give a presentation about the trip during the annual ATHE conference in Eastbourne in December, after which he will accept the award.
The trip highlights the University’s commitment to enhancing the student experience and was funded by the Quintin Hogg Trust.
