Jessica Mills, currently studying the Television Production BA Honours course at the University of Westminster, had the opportunity to join a freelance journalist and her camera operator to cover the nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for the Chinese Global Television network CGTN, as part of a unique internship.
In her role, Jessica had to assist the filming coverage with researching for live broadcasts, liaising with members of the public and looking after equipment.
Jessica got this unique job opportunity after attending a talk delivered by support service HelloGrads, which helps prepare students with the transition from University to real life. During the talk, Jessica met HelloGrads’ Founder Sophie Phillipson, who connected her with a journalist from the Chinese Global Television network CGTN who offered her this opportunity
Talking about her unique experience, Jessica said: "Covering the wedding of the year was the most exhilarating and tiring thing I've ever done.
"I had to make sure we were clued up on all developments on the day, and that we were accurately reporting what Meghan was wearing and which celebrities were in attendance. It was the experience of a lifetime, and I think any job I get after University is going to struggle to compete.
"Happily, the journalist I worked with was impressed with my work and is keen to stay in touch and work together again, which is what interning is all about.”
The support service HelloGrads, which enabled Jessica to get this exclusive internship, works in collaboration with The University of Westminster’s innovative Creative Enterprise Centre (CEC), a dynamic one-of-a-kind enterprise hub aimed at bridging the gap between University, industry and communities as well as empowering students to take charge of their careers.
The partnership also enabled other students to help them achieve successful careers paths such as Westminster Television Production and Film graduates Liam Pedersen and Mike Fairhurst, Founders of Reso Digital, who created digital and social media content for renowned customers including the NHS, Danone, Warner Bros. and Channel 5.
