A University of Westminster undergraduate student presented her research at the Society for Endocrinology’s annual conference at the Harrogate International Conference center.

Anna Kerekgyarto is a final year BSc Honours Human Nutrition student in the Faculty of Science and Technology. Ms Kerekgyarto’s research, supervised by Dr Richard Mackenzie, is part of her dissertation and focuses on a novel cellular pathway thought to contribute to increased insulin resistance, one of the major causes of type 2 diabetes.

Dr Mackenzie says “Type 2 diabetes can be a fatal disease with the known secondary complications (ie cardiovascular disease) made progressively worse with elevations in blood glucose. This is an important area of research because for the first time, we have been able to characterise this cellular pathway in pre-diabetics”.

“The next step is to act on this cellular pathway, thereby potentially reducing blood glucose concentrations to near normal”.

This research is ongoing and looking for additional participants. If you are interested in volunteering and have a family history of diabetes and/or are slightly overweight – please email [email protected].
