Dr Atef Alshaer, Lecturer in Arabic Language and Culture, acted as consultant for the BBC Radio 4 programme Poems from Syria.

The programme explores the poetic themes of the Syrian civil war, and explains how poetry functions as a witness as well as a therapeutic means to the tragedies that Syrians have been suffering since 2013.

Dr Alshaer provides a background to the poetry and the themes and tropes the poetry in question covers. He also highlights the significance of poetry in general to Arab culture.
