A new Centre of Excellence and Research in Yoga and Traditional Medicine, the first of its kind in the UK, will open at St Charles Centre for Health and Wellbeing in North Kensington and will explore the provision of yoga and Indian traditional medicine through social prescription.
The centre will also expand this service into other settings including GP surgeries. The University of Westminster will run a collaborative research and development programme led by Professor David Peters, Director of the Westminster Centre for Resilience. The University of Westminster will, in particular, evaluate the yoga services provided at St Charles hospital.
Professor David Peters said about the project: “Yoga is now part of everyday life for millions of people in the UK and scientific interest in meditation is at an all-time high. Colleagues in our Faculty of Science and Technology are already researching herbal medicines and evaluating social prescribing. We want to explore these approaches in different NHS settings and gather evidence for their wider use.”
The Centre was officially inaugurated at the Science museum in London on Wednesday 18 April in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Charles and Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi.
