Dr Paresh Kathrani presented his work on Law Gamification at the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) ‘Training of Lawyers’ event.

Following a series of successful LawTech events hosted at Westminster Law School in 2017, Senior Lecturer in Law Dr Paresh Kathrani was invited to deliver a presentation on the law gamification work, which he has been developing with colleagues at the University of Westminster, at the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) ‘Training of Lawyers’ event in Brussels on 14 December 2017.

The event was attended by lawyers and judges from across Europe, and by members of international institutions, including the EU Commission.

Dr Kathrani is part of the University’s Serious Games at Westminster research group (SGAW). In Brussels he presented a selection of projects developed with SGAW colleagues, including REVRLaw, developed with Markos Mentzelopoulos, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for the Computer Games Development BSc Honours course; and a 3D office game and law of murder game developed with Computer Scientists Dr Daphne Economou, and Dr Vassiliki Bouki. Dr Kathrani also held talks with legal practitioners on the value of using serious games for the purposes of teaching law.

He commented: “Technology, especially through automation, is not only changing the way in which legal services are provided today, but naturally provides a valuable opportunity to develop innovative teaching methods too. Westminster Law School is exploring both. It has been a pleasure working with SGAW and colleagues in the Department of Computer Science on these games and we hope to develop some more in the future.”

Westminster Law School has held many LawTech events and will be hosting some more as well as other LawTech initiatives in 2018. For further details, please contact Dr Paresh Kathrani ([email protected]) at Westminster Law School.
