On Friday 7 September the University of Westminster hosted a celebratory dinner at The Langham Hotel welcoming supporters, donors, students and alumni to celebrate the huge difference that philanthropic donations make to the University.

The evening recognised the support of the University’s two top giving groups, The Robert Mitchell Society and The George Cayley Circle who have made possible a number of projects that are enhancing the student experience, funding research projects and supporting the local community.

Some of the key projects include the AlSadi Changing Lives Programme, supported by Dr Majid AlSadi, which takes students on a volunteering and cultural exchange programme to Jordan; the Westminster Working Cultures programme, supported by alumnus Trevor Yang, which enables students to visit Hong Kong to experience the international professional environment; and The 125 Fund which offers students grants to support projects and activities that will enhance their employability and help them to achieve their full potential. The impact of these important projects was showcased in a short film, screened during the dinner.

Students who had received scholarships, 125 funding and international travel opportunities joined Chancellor Lady Sorrell and the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr Peter Bonfield, alongside staff and alumni, to thank donors for their continued support.

This year’s event focused on the opportunities that have been created by our alumni and friends of the University and included a keynote address from Helen Arber, Manager of the Unite Foundation, a partner of the University that provide accommodation scholarships to students who have previously been in care or are estranged from their families. Alumni who have made an outstanding contribution to their field were also commended during the evening and received special prizes in the University’s first ever Alumni Awards.

Speaking about the event, the Vice-Chancellor said: “It was an honour to be able to thank our donors who have given generously over the past year to support the student experience. Philanthropic donations really make a difference to the lives of so many of our students.”

The University of Westminster would like to thank The Langham Hotel for its generous support and to the community of donors, supporters and friends whose continued generosity enhances our students’ experience.
