This week Professor Jane Lewis, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Westminster and Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, has travelled as part of the UK delegation to attend the launch of the 2015 UK-Turkey Year of Science and Innovation.

The programme was launched at TUBITAK headquarters in Ankara by Richard Moore, HMA Ambassador, Professor Yilmaz of the Turkey Ministry of Science, Jeremy Clayton of the Department of Business Innovation and Skills, and TUBITAK President Professor Altunbasak.

Over the course of the trip to Turkey the delegation visited two universities: the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara, with which Westminster already has close links, and Bogazici University in Istanbul, where they identified opportunities for research collaboration.

The delegation also explored collaboration with industry, visiting the Istanbul Development Agency and Teknopark Istanbul. A networking reception was hosted at the British Consulate General in Istanbul, to which UK alumni were invited, including Westminster graduates.

Of particular interest to researchers with existing or developing links in Turkey is the Newton-Katip Celebi funding provided jointly by the UK and Turkey over five years to develop collaboration between the two countries.

Internationalisation is key to the University’s strategic vision and identity. We have extensive connections with universities and industries throughout the world and our Global Engagement Strategy seeks to strengthen and deepen those connections even further. Our international partnerships and teaching support the development of our academic and research portfolios. Experiences that enable our staff and students to operate in an increasingly interconnected, internationalised world are key to our approach.
