We already offer exceptional facilities for our architecture students. Now, in addition to our existing architecture studios, state-of the-art CAD lab, and fully-staffed wood and metal workshops, we are excited about our new ‘fab lab’ that will be up and running next academic year.

The Fab Lab (fabrication laboratory) includes two workshop areas offering advanced digital model making facilities, equipped with flexible computer controlled tools that cover different scales and various materials, with the aim to make "almost anything".

The new University of Westminster fabrication laboratory represents a major expansion of our already extensive workshops. To our existing suite of 3D printers and laser cutters, it adds a wide selection of digital equipment that will provide facilities ranging from desktop 3D printing and CNC knife cutting, to large scale CNC routing, CNC metal milling and robot fabrication. The fab lab will provide an environment where our students can learn, make and experiment at the cutting edge of digital design and fabrication.

“Fab Lab West puts Westminster at the leading edge of digital modelling” says Professor David Dernie, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment. “It provides students with the skills and creative ambition to be tomorrow’s leaders in the age of digital construction.”

“We are delighted that Fab Lab West will be available for a range of student teaching and projects and to offer specialist training short courses, as well as new areas of support for research and PhD students” says Professor Katharine Heron, Head of Westminster’s Department of Architecture.

Dr David Scott (Senior Lecturer and academic leader for the Fab Lab) comments: “The new fabrication laboratory will give our students a fantastic opportunity to produce the highest quality built work, at a range of scales and in a wide variety of materials, and to immerse themselves in the exciting and rapidly expanding field of digital fabrication.”
