RIBA award-winning architecture practice Tonkin Liu has published a new book titled The Evolution of Shell Lace Structure, coinciding with their exhibition at the Royal Institute of British Architects, 3 September to 8 October 2014.

Practice Directors Anna Liu and Mike Tonkin are studio tutors on our Master of Architecture (MArch) course.

Tonkin Liu has previously been awarded a research grant from RIBA for the continued development of Shell Lace Structure. Shell Lace Structure is a tailored, single surface structural technique invented by Tonkin Liu. The result of five years of intense practice-based research in collaboration with engineers at Arup, the technique integrates structural principles expressed in 500 million years of variation in shells, the ancient art of tailoring, and cutting-edge digital manufacturing technology, resulting in ultra-strong, lightweight, and visually unique architectural structures.

Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu will be delivering a talk as part of the RIBA Perspectives on Architecture series at 6.15pm on 16 September. Find out more.

Dr Harry Charrington, Head of the Department of Architecture at the University of Westminster, has written one of the three keynote essays in the book.

“Packed with tenacity, elegance, and generosity, this is a beautifully conceived and illustrated book. Whether sheltering crowds or sweeping over gorges, Tonkin Liuʼs work is perfectly calculated and ravishingly beautiful.” Piers Gough, RA, Partner CZWG Architects
