The University of Westminster Press launches today, 12 October 2016 with its first full-length academic text Critical Theory of Communication by Professor Christian Fuchs.

The Press began its activities in 2015 and over the last year has published two academic journals and has commissioned a strong programme of peer-reviewed titles, which will be published in open-access formats, epub and pdf as well as in print-on-demand form.

Open access publishing is an important part of the University of Westminster Press’s mission, aligning with the values of the university to broaden the reach and impact of its academic research with the values of accessibility and public engagement at its heart.

The University of Westminster Press has a specially designed logo, combining an open laptop and open book, to create the letter W which symbolizes the mission of the Press to make its scholarly publications available, free from paywalls, to a global audience in digital and print formats. It is one of a number of new open access university presses in the UK that have been established over the last year.

The first book to be published by UWP is ‘Critical Theory of Communication: New Readings of Lukács, Adorno, Marcuse, Honneth and Habermas in the Age of the Internet’ which is the first in a series from editor and Professor of Social Media and Director of the Communication and Media Research Institute, Christian Fuchs.

The book contributes to the foundations of a critical theory of communication as shaped by the forces of digital capitalism. Professor Fuchs is one of the world’s leading theorists of digital media and here explores how the thought of the Frankfurt School can be applied to critically understand media in the age of the Internet.

The series, ‘Critical Digital & Social Media Studies’ will study the role of the Internet, digital and social media in society and make critical interventions. Publications will analyse how power structures, digital capitalism, ideology, domination and social struggles shape and are shaped by digital and social media; its authors will be a range of leading international social media scholars.
