Dr Patricia Hogwood, Reader in European Politics in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities writes about the plans to formally launch the Brexit process and the implications of this for Europe on The Conversation

The decision to trigger Article 50 in March 2017 "deals a body blow to European leaders", says Dr Hogwood, "the timing seems designed to catch the EU’s champions at their most vulnerable."

In March 2017 Italy will have just finished their election process, possibly electing a new Prime Minister, Germany will be in the midst of a federal election campaign and France will be starting theirs in April leaving the leadership of the EU to negotiate on Brexit potentially diminished.
