A new documentary made about the life of the acclaimed designer Alexander McQueen opened in cinemas on Friday 8 June.

The highly acclaimed documentary McQueen features interviews with close friends and colleagues including Andrew Groves, Course Leader for BA Fashion Design. Groves was both Alexander McQueen’s partner and design assistant, working on many of his infamous early collections including Highland Rape and Dante.

Groves said: “It is only with hindsight that I appreciate how lucky I was to have worked so closely with such a creative genius, someone redefined the parameters within which fashion is now perceived. This documentary offers an unprecedented insight into the person behind that creativity with interviews with a number of us that work with McQueen in those early days, and I think will bring an even deeper appreciation of his work to a much wider audience.”

The film tells the life of McQueen, from dreaming about dresses, tailoring on Saville Row to how he set about establishing McQueen the brand while surviving on unemployment benefit in East London.

Through the eyes of friends, family, colleagues and mentors McQueen exposes the highs and lows of the fashion maverick and the legacy he has left behind.
