Professor Graham Smith, Director of the Centre for the Study of Democracy, was invited to act as a rapporteur to close the annual World Forum for Democracy organised by the Council of Europe.

This year's conference was on the theme 'Democracy and Equality - Does Education Matter?'. Involving hundreds of activists and policy makers, the forum showcased democratic innovations in the practice of education from across the world.

Speaking at the closing plenary on the morning that Trump won the US presidency, Professor Smith stressed that there are alternative ways of responding to widespread public disillusionment with traditional political instititutions. The types of innovations showcased at the conference are exemplars of a more participatory democratic response to our current political ills.
