With over 60 staff, the department offers the breadth and depth of experiences required in research, professional practice, teaching and learning. Over a number of years, it has established strong working relationships with major internationally recognised professional bodies – it is an ACCA Gold status Approved Learning Partner and accredited as a Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment Centre of Excellence. The department has special relationships established with leading City-based financial institutions, such as Goldman Sachs and Bloomberg. Most of the staff members are active in research on contemporary areas of accounting and finance.
Dr Thapar says: “In my new role as the Head of the department of Accounting, Finance and Governance at the University of Westminster, I am fortunate to be working with a highly trained and committed team of professionals and academic staff. Our staff members have Postgraduate Certificates in Higher Education and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy teaching qualifications."
Dr Thapar is taking over from the late Professor Orla Gough, who sadly passed away last summer. He joined the University after having worked as a treasurer and manager in a major Japanese Citibank and as a chief markets analyst and strategist for a US company. He has over 25 years of combined experience in the financial services industry and in university lecturing, teaching for our MBA and MSc Finance courses and in all areas of the Management MSc programme. His research interests lie in evaluating the performances and assessing the economic benefits of alternative investments in private and institutional investment portfolios.
According to Dr Thapar, "the Accounting, Finance and Governance department is resourced well, with modern buildings and the latest capital markets based technology. Thus, it is positioned to meet the global learning challenges of the millennial generation and to provide our diverse international student body with the highest quality of education, instruction and experiential learning we can offer. Further, we aim to utilise our combined expertise to spearhead our research efforts in accounting and finance to meet our university vision for 2020.”
