Founded by Fraser Matcham, a Westminster Law School alumnus, Legal Utopia has successfully joined Barclays’ new law and technology incubator, Eagle Lab, in partnership with The Law Society of England and Wales.

Legal Utopia is the result of a collaborative partnership involving Dr Paresh Kathrani from the Westminster Law School and Markos Mentzelopoulos from the School of Computer Science and Engineering. It aims to develop and manage access to an ambitious justice project through a web-based application software that can autonomously analyse a user’s problem and identify it within different fields of law.

The consortium, part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, was identified as a “high-growth potential” venture and so, was one of the first LawTech start-ups to join the incubator. Barclays’ new post-accelerator LawTech lab also includes a partnership with 14 prominent partner law firms including Clifford Chance, Clyde & Co, DWF and Capital Law, as well as its event partner Legal Geek and two universities.

In response to joining the space, Fraser Matcham said: “It is absolutely fantastic that Legal Utopia has joined this space to aid our expansion, and we are already seeing the benefits. In fact, only on the second day, I decided to upgrade our membership to a private office to ensure the team and its various incoming collaborators have the space and resources they need to be effective and efficient. Everyone from Legal Utopia is looking forward to meeting and working with Barclays Eagle Labs and all its partners.”

Vasilis Kotsos, a Westminster Computer Science alumnus, also joined Legal Utopia in June 2018 as their full-time A.I Software Engineer and Associate Researcher. He said: “It is tremendous to be working for Legal Utopia. They have provided an excellent work environment and great career progression prospects. It is also great that I get to work with other Westminster Alumni.”

Legal Utopia presented at the Barclays A.I Frenzy event on Thursday 16 August, with presentations from Barclays Ventures, magic circle law firms and other start-ups utilising artificial intelligence in law. The Legal Utopia presentation was delivered by Fraser Matcham and Vasilis Kotsos in front of the Lab's partners and start-ups, as well as investors, journalists and Barclays’ in-house legal team.
