Dr. Christine Wall and Prof. Linda Clarke of the Centre for the study of the Production of the Built Environment (ProBE) were present at the launch on March 12th, at the Houses of Parliament, of a new report highlighting the low numbers of women who work in the construction industry.

Dr. Wall and Prof. Clarke wrote the first chapter describing the historical context and revealing that women have been present in significant numbers at various times over the last three centuries.

Today, despite forming almost half the UK workforce, women account for only 11 percent of construction workers and just 1 percent of those on-site. This new report, edited by Meg Munn MP and with contributors from academia and the construction industry, highlights the obstacles women face and sets out an agenda for change. Published by the Smith Institute the Report can be downloaded from www.smith-institute.org.uk
