Anastasia Denisova, who is also a member of the Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI) at the University of Westminster, actively shares and discusses her own research, research updates, and the wider news agenda on her Twitter account. Her conversations spark interest and engagement from her students, fellow researchers, and even from journalists looking for commentary.
The judging panel of the competition which comprised Higher Education and social media experts recognised Anastasia’s use of Twitter as a sounding board for immediate feedback on research, which could set a valuable example for others in higher education to follow.
Anastasia’s research includes the role of Internet memes as the casual artful means of political resistance and viral cultures. She has also published research on the traditional and user-generated media coverage of the Russian elites, digital media and public sphere in Russia, and she is studying parody microblogging and the use of Twitter accounts as satirical mouthpieces.
Speaking about her recognition, Anastasia said: “I am honoured and flattered. I think all of us academics are trying to figure out how to use social media for the benefit of our research, teaching and communication in general. I am still finding my ways, looking at the examples of many amazing colleagues in my Faculty, School of Media, Arts & Design, who have highly engaging Twitter accounts.
“As a researcher in viral cultures and Internet communication, I take digital cultures seriously. We cannot ignore social media, but we can try to tame them and use them to bring something interesting and informed to the world.”
Anastasia’s prize will be an edtech visit for her class, with virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and a robot.
