This collaborative project is open to all students and gives you the chance to work with MSc games development students from the Institute for Information Systems and Computer Media (IICM) at Graz University of Technology, Austria.
The aim of the project is to come up with a game concept that can be developed to any level – from a paper prototype to a complete game.
You’ll be grouped together with other students based on your skill set and will decide among yourselves who does what. Collaboration with team members in the UK and Austria will take place remotely, via online project management and communication tools. All teams will also get help from academics here and from Graz University.
Teams can use any software to develop their games, but the software available here during the hackathon (see below) will be in Mac labs and will include Adobe CC and the Adobe Games SDK.
Subjects for games could include (but are not restricted to) the following, and could be linked to research activities at both universities:
There may be the chance for project prototypes to be developed further and project ideas could also be developed as final projects, as part of the BSc Multimedia Computing, BSc Games Development or MSc Multimedia Computing degrees.
3-day hackathon and project presentations
From 27 to 29 May, teams will have the opportunity to come together for a three-day games hackathon at the University. At the end of the hackathon, you’ll present your project to the panel and the best presentation will receive an award.
The expected project timeline is as follows:
- Week 1 – March 16-20: Project announced – Expression of interest extended to 27 March.
- Week 2 – March 23-27: Form groups and familiarisation – Form groups and set up online resources for group communication and exchange of documents and assets.
- Week 3 – April 30-3: Project starts.
- Week 4 – April 6-10: Groups exchange ideas and decide on the game concept. 6 April – Description for the game concept and set team roles and tasks.
- Week 5 – April 13-17: Teams identify roles and tasks and start collecting and creating assets. 13 April – review of progress.
- Week 6 – April 20-24: Game concept and game mechanics. 17 April – Decide on game mechanics. 20 April – First draft concept.
- Week 7 – April 27-1: Development.
- Week 8 – May 4-8: Development.
- Week 9 – May 11-15: Development.
- Week 10 – May 18-22: Development.
- Week 11 – May 25-29: Hackathon. Project ends.
