We hope you had a good summer and welcome back!

While you've been away, we've looked at your responses to our library and IT surveys in March, and have started making improvements based on your feedback.

The survey responses and information on the changes we've made, and are continuing to make, are below.

You can let us know about any other ideas and concerns you have by contacting us through Twitter @UniWestLib or by filling out one of our feedback cards, available at your campus library.

New online timetabling

We have launched a new timetabling system this year. The new service shows all your teaching in one place in an easy-to-read calendar format and lets you subscribe to your personal timetable on your smartphone, tablet or personal calendar.

Survey feedback

Thank you if you completed the library and IT user surveys last March.

We've looked at the results and are using the feedback to:

  • improve the library study space, especially the quiet and silent study areas
  • improve the password changing process
  • replace old PCs with new ones
  • increase the availability of wifi throughout University buildings
  • review our webpages to ensure that information is up-to-date and comprehensive
  • improve how we manage the reading list process in order to get books and e-resources more quickly.

Blackboard improvements

We've added some important new features to Blackboard this academic year:

  • Accessible via all main web browsers (Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari). For more information, visit the Blackboard Help website
  • Updated MyGrades design: We've updated the interface and you can now view feedback easily by clicking on the View Feedback link.
  • Portfolio improvements: Portfolios are now accessible from the main navigation and have a new authoring canvas. Instructors can create portfolio assignments,
  • SafeAssign integration: SafeAssign is integrated into regular Blackboard Learn assignments.

Blackboard Mobile Learn App

You'll continue to have access to course materials on mobile devices and receive alerts when new content is posted.

If you haven't downloaded this free app already, we recommend that you do – it works on a variety of devices, including iOS, Android, Blackberry and webOS smartphones. You can check out the app's features on the Blackboard website.

Past exam papers now in Blackboard

All past exam papers are now available in the relevant module sites in Blackboard.

Papers can be accessed via the 'Past Exam Papers' link in the Tools section of the relevant Blackboard site.

Online booking for library group study rooms

We've introduced an online room booking service that allows you to book group study rooms at Cavendish, Marylebone and Regent Libraries. You'll be able to see any bookings you make in your personal timetable.

Rooms can be booked for any time that the library is open – just check your library's opening hours.

Harrow Library has two rooms on the first floor that you can use for group study, and you don't need to book them in advance.

Marylebone Library refurbishment

In response to your feedback about the Marylebone Library, we began refurbishing the second and third floors over the summer, bringing them up to the same high standard as the first floor. There will be new furniture and two additional group study rooms.

We expect the library refurbishment to be completed in the first few days of October. There is some disruption to the service and we apologise for any inconvenience.

Laptop loan period now 24 hours at Marylebone Library

From September the lending period for laptops at Marylebone Library will be 24 hours from the time of borrowing, in line with our other three libraries.

Mobile Library Search

Library Search is now available for mobile devices.

Psychology books and journals now in Cavendish Library

The Psychology Department recently moved from Regent to Cavendish Campus, so we've now moved all our psychology books and journals to Cavendish Library.

If you need help finding psychology resources, get in touch with Sabri Dikmen, our Academic Liaison Librarian for psychology.

To accommodate the larger number of students using Cavendish Library, we are planning some changes to increase the amount of study space.
