Dr Vinood Patel, Biochemist in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, appeared on Channel 4’s How to Lose Weight Well demonstrating how alcohol actively gets in the way of the human body burning calories through an experiment.

By burning cubes of paraffin, which represented the metabolism process, Dr Patel demonstrated how alcohol jumps the metabolism queue by burning up much quicker than sugar and leaving fats behind to be stored in the body.

He explained: “Whenever we have a meal with a drink, then the alcohol will be metabolised first. Because we don’t have a mechanism for storing it, alcohol is being treated like a toxin, which has to be cleared and so the metabolism of fats and sugars have to wait until we’ve cleared all the alcohol from our system.”
