The Helena Kennedy Foundation celebrated the success of two University of Westminster students by awarding them scholarships at the House of Lords on Monday 2 March 2015.

Pelin Top, first year Biomedical Sciences BSc Honours student from the Faculty of Science and Technology, and Monica Thompson, first year Politics and International Relations BA Honours student from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, have overcome a variety of obstacles to study at the University of Westminster.

The Helena Kennedy Foundation exists to overcome social injustice by providing financial bursaries, mentoring and support to disadvantaged students from the further and adult education sectors, enabling them to complete their studies in higher education and move on successfully into employment.

Pelin and Monika attended the Helena Kennedy Foundation 2014/15 awards ceremony alongside the University of Westminster’s Scholarship Office to receive a bursary of £1,500 each to help cover the costs of university study, as well as on-going guidance, mentoring, help with work placements and training from the Foundation.

The University of Westminster provides funding for six Helena Kennedy Foundation scholarships each year.

The ceremony was chaired by Dr Ann Limb, Founder and Chair of Trustees of the Foundation, and Baroness Helena Kennedy QC presented the certificates to the successful Westminster students.

Guests were then treated to full afternoon tea with sandwiches, scones and cakes, and the winners were photographed on the terrace overlooking the Thames.

Charlotte Regan of the University of Westminster’s Scholarship Office said it was “A happy and heart-warming occasion on a bright and sunny afternoon. Congratulations to Pelin and Monica!”

Exam board Oxford Cambridge and RSA (OCR) sponsored the event at the House of Lords. Charlotte Bosworth, Director of Skills and Employment at OCR said, “It has been inspirational to meet today’s bursary recipients, all of whom have demonstrated true resilience in the face of difficult circumstances. It is a privilege to hear their stories of success and to witness first-hand the potential of the FE sector once barriers have been removed. Thanks to the Foundation’s support and their own hard work and talent, their futures look very bright.”
