The competition, organised by the Design Museum, rewards 40 design students with the opportunity to attend the exclusive Design Factory Symposium.
Meera Lad’s design proposal was a colourful concrete fixing solution, which involves pouring a vibrantly coloured liquid into the cracks of concrete buildings and surfaces. The submission was inspired by Design Museum’s Designs of the Year competition exhibition, entitled House for Trees, which aims to put more green spaces back into cities.
The submission process began at the start of the term, with the students visiting the Designs of the Year exhibition. Once the students had found something to take inspiration from, their task was to complete a four stage concept proposal. This included: research, investigation, development and a proposal/solution.
Meera Lad is taught by Senior Lecturers Iwona Abrams, Katie Hayes and Hans-Dieter Reichert (Module Leader for the Live Project module). Speaking about Meera’s success, Iwona Abrams said: “In the last three years, Graphic Communication Design students have successfully entered the Design Museum briefs competition and Meera Lad will be our new addition to the winners’ list. The briefs offer a great opportunity for students, whose design interests are located in a broad analysis of global cultures and subcultures.
“Meera’s project fulfilled the criteria, through an introduction of two fundamental research methods: observation and interview, which are most important aspects of people centred design and its relevance to the real world. Participation in the Design Museum seminar has been always highly valued by our students and we are sure that Meera will make a great contribution to this year’s national event.”
