Get involved in an international student collaborative activity to design and develop a game.

This is an extra curricular activity aiming to expose you to new ways of working collaboratively. It provides a fertile environment for students to acquire technical, creative and transferable skills valuable for their professional development. In addition, it will help you to enrich your portfolio and increase your employability.

This is the second year that this project will run. In 2015, 32 students participated in the project, 15 from the University of Westminster and 17 from Graz University of Technology. The University of Westminster students were studying various degrees at different levels. The Graz University of Technology Institute participants were all from an Information Systems and Computer Media (IICM) degree from the Games Lab.

As part of the project, students with different skills will be grouped in teams. Teams will receive assistance from academics at the University of Westminster and Graz University of Technology to develop a game concept that can be developed to any level, from a paper prototype to a complete game. Students will agree between their teams about their role and contribution in the team and the project. Communication and collaboration between team members in the UK and in Austria will be mainly done remotely, using online project management and communication tools. 

Teams will take part in two game hackathons: one at Graz the week starting the 11 April and one in London the week starting the 30 May. At the first game hackathon, the students will solidify their team's game concept, present their idea to a panel and receive constructive feedback from academics and other teams to help them improve their concept. During the second game hackathon, the teams will finalise their project and present it to a panel. The best presentation will receive an award.

The best projects and teams will be supported to be developed their games further and take part in competitions. It is also possible that project ideas could be developed further as final projects (as part of the BSc Multimedia Computing, BSc Games development or MSc Multimedia Computing degrees). Travelling and accommodation to take part in the game hackathon will be self-funded by the students. However, students can apply individually to receive financial support towards their travel to Graz, through the University scholarships scheme.

Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) students are also eligible to apply individually to receive financial support towards an international activity from the FST International Bursary scheme. Further information can be found in the attached Application for support document and on the FST blog

An indicative cost for a flight ticket to Graz from London is approximately £200, while accommodation at Graz can be found at approximately £50 per night.

Please note that you can still take part at the project even if you are not willing or not able to travel and take part at the 3-day hackathon at Graz.

Some game concepts can be related, but not restricted, to:

  • politics
  • law
  • history
  • fashion
  • arts
  • biology
  • domestic violence 

and could be linked to research activities at both Universities. The teams can decide to use any software they want for the development of their game. However, software which is available at the University of Westminster that students could use in MAC labs include Adobe CC and the Adobe Games SDK.

Below is an expected timeline for the implementation of the project:

  • 1-15 March – Project kicks off – form groups and familiarisation – set up online resources for group communication and exchange of documents and assets
  • 16-22 March  – Groups exchange ideas, collect data and decide on the game concept
  • 23 March Submit a short description for the game concept and set team roles and tasks to prepare for this
  • 11-13 April – First game hackathon at Graz University of Technology, Austria  game concept and mechanics
  • 14 April-27 May – Development [expected deliverables TBA]
  • 30 May-1 June – Second game hackathon – University of Westminster in London. Project ends.
