First year Smart Computer Systems BEng Honours student, Maha Javed, has been named in the top 10 students for TARGETjobs’ female Undergraduate of the Year 2021 award.

Student Maha Javed

Maha has well-rounded experience and achieved lots already, making her a great candidate for the award. She has a mix of entrepreneurial and leadership skills through being involved in various activities, such as being founder of a business and president of a society which aims to support and empower female entrepreneurs to grow their businesses by leveraging digital technologies. Maha has years of research experience, having talked with many industry experts, and she has been nominated for and won many international awards and recognitions.

The application process for the award, which is run by Target Jobs and sponsored by Rolls-Royce, involved answering questions and completing several psychometric tests. After Maha’s application was long-listed, she was invited to the assessment centre and a one-day networking event, where she got to meet and get to know the other finalists and speak to senior representatives and assessors at Rolls-Royce. A few days later, Maha received a call to let her know that she made it to the top 10. She also secured an internship with Rolls-Royce, where she will be working with their R² Data Labs.

Target Jobs provide graduate jobs and schemes, internships and placements, advice to students and graduates and more. The Undergraduate of the Year awards take place annually, which aim to find the best undergraduates in the UK. Rolls-Royce, the award sponsor, provide those who apply with the opportunity to win a paid internship, a trip abroad and other exclusive rewards. The finale of the competition will take place on 30 April.

Talking about her achievement, Maha said: “It is an honour that I have been nominated for the female Undergraduate of the Year award 2021 and made it to the top 10 out of many students across the UK. I am the only female student from the University of Westminster that has been nominated for this award. The experience has been amazing as I also secured a summer internship with Rolls Royce. It has shaped my future for the better and turned me into a more confident individual.”
