David’s presentation was centred on how to add value to news stories, how to take original content and maximise it. The way people listen to radio has changed and is continuing to evolve. He also presented some pointers on how to adapt the way radio news are delivered, as it is no longer the first place people hear their news from.
Talking about his work as News Editor, he mentioned the importance of extra detail and sound bites, as well as the need to write differently in order to take and use the best audio. He finished his presentation adding: “What we have to think about in terms of news in 2018 is: why are we there? What are we adding to the show?”
When teaching the Radio and Digital Production BA and Journalism BA students at the University, David not only teaches them how to produce good radio but also how to consume it. His approach to teaching is based on how the students of today are the broadcasters and writers of the future and can have great ideas on how to change the way radio works.
