This is an AHRC-funded Network project which began on 1 September 2013. We are planning three Symposia for 2014 to bring together a range of scholars of the Great War to discuss new perspectives, and to formulate alternative narratives of war that move away from the grand narratives of the trenches of the Western Front.

The symposia will be as follows:

  • Symposium 1: 'Alternate Spaces: Journeys' – to explore physical, spiritual and literary journeys, 29 March 2014 at Queen Mary’s, London.
  • Symposium 2: 'Alternate Spaces: Landscapes' – to include art history and heritage as well as literary landscapes, 7 July 2014 at Plymouth University.
  • Symposium 3: 'Alternate Spaces: Voices' – to include publishing/book history and the book trade, 9 September 2014 at Oxford Brookes University.

Each symposium will comprise around ten invited speakers who will deliver a short paper and engage in the development of a wider discussion. The project hopes to produce an edited collection of essays (Routledge) and a special edition of Journal of War and Culture Studies.

We have a number of spaces remaining at each symposium. Anyone interested in participating should send a 200-word abstract to the organisers, Angela K. Smith (Plymouth University [email protected]) and Krista Cowman (University of Lincoln [email protected]) by 29 November 2013. We would be particularly interested to hear from Early Career Researchers.
