The Great Start project's main purpose is to deliver an excellent welcome to our full-time undergraduates. In order to make sure that the new students receive the best possible induction, the project brings together all areas of the university - the Students' Union, the faculties and corporate services.
The most exciting part of this project is that it uses current students to deliver a personal welcome to the new starters; current students will be the first point of contact for the new undergraduates for the first couple of weeks.
What you will do
The title for the students that carry out the welcome is "Friends of Arriving New Students" (FANS); these FANS will look after the new arrivals, show them the local area, undertake library tours, get them up to speed with Blackboard, plan out their social life for the first week and ensure that they attend all the relevant faculty and academic sessions. Finally, they will be there as someone to talk to about what can be a key milestone in someone's life. As a FAN you will be able to experience what it's like to be part of a team. You will also be able to join in with different activities and have some fun.
In return you will receive
- Cash reward on successful completion
- Volunteering experience, which can help your employability
- Training in key transferrable skills (two-day training with overnight stay - dates TBC)
- Leadership skills
- Free access to some Students' Union events
- Fast track to Student Ambassador Scheme
