The seminar has been organised as part of a regular series of ProBE events to raise important issues for discussion and to show films which have particular significance for the production of the built environment. ProBE is a joint research centre between the Westminster Business School (WBS) and the School of Architecture and the Built Environment (SABE), committed to the development of a rich programme of research and related activities, including projects, oral history, film, exhibitions, and seminars and providing a forum for debate and a focus for interdisciplinary and international activity related to the production of the built environment.

3-5pm Seminar (Room L196):

Polish migrants’ contribution to the British construction industry
Short contributions from the following - together with lots of discussion:
  • Ian Fitzgerald (Northumbria University) – The Polish Migration: The Folly of Perception
  • Stephen Cruse: Polish vocational education applied to rehabilitating London housing
  • Kasia Bobrzak (Northumbria University) – Difficulties in recognising Polish qualifications: a case study
  • Justyna Deidda and Paulina Burzynska on the work of RIFT Internationally speaking
5-7 pm Film: 'En construcción' (Under construction) (2000) by José Luis Guerín. This documentary film is the first in the ProBE film series. It narrates the construction of an apartment block over 18 months in El Chino, a working class, migrant neighbourhood in Barcelona, including the stories of the building workers, some of whom are migrants. It has won several awards, including Goya Prize as Best Documentary in 2002.
