This workshop – organised by Dr Daniel Conway and Olimpia Burchiellaro of the Gender and Sexuality Research Group at the Centre for the Study of Democracy – will explore and consider concepts, practices and issues in contemporary queer activism.

Queer activism is generally defined by a rejection of mainstream gay civil rights activism for being too conformist and is characterised by a politics of carnival, transgression, and parody, which leads to deconstruction, decentring, revisionist readings, and an anti-assimilationist politics. Queer activism broadens the terrain of LGBTQ+ politics to encompass areas not normally seen as the terrain of sexuality.
