Constructing Post-War Britain:
Building Workers’ Stories 1950-70
The Centre for the Study of the Built Environment (ProBE) has organised this symposium which represents the climax of a two-year oral history research project funded by the Leverhulme Trust in which nearly 60 building workers have taken part, recording their experiences of working on five of the most significant construction schemes of the post-war era: Stevenage New Town, the Barbican, Sizewell A, the South Bank, and the M1.
Professor Janet Druker (WBS) will give a talk on Construction labour in the post-war period. After this, the project will be introduced by Dr Christine Wall, and each case study will be presented by members of the research team (Dr Christine Wall, Prof. Linda Clarke, Dr Charles McGuire and Dr Olivia Muñoz-Rojas). A project webpage and pamphlets of the five cases will be launched at the symposium.
