On Friday 30 October 2009 Thorsten Schulten of the Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftliches Institut (WSI) of the Hans Böckler Foundation in Germany will be presenting to the next regular monthly seminar of the British Universities Industrial Relations Association (BUIRA) Central London Branch. The title of Thorsten’s talk is Fair wages and social Europe: a European minimum wage policy? , in which he will examine whether the European Union could in principle specify guidelines for minimum wage regulation in the all Member States and the possibility of a ‘decency wage’. This will draw on and update his recent paper for the European Journal of Industrial Relations and discuss recent developments in and research on minimum wage policy under the conditions of the current crisis.
Thorsten is a leading expert on minimum wage policy in Europe and the talk promises to be very interesting, fitting in well with the 2009/10 London BUIRA programme which is focussed on the transformation of employment relations in Europe and perspectives for the future – offering new approaches to the subject of industrial relations and insights into key current issues, whilst at the same time presenting important research in the area. There promises to be a lively discussion, one which is highly relevant to the current situation of economic crisis. So do put this date in your diary now. These meetings can be full. To ensure a place and to help forecast catering provision, please inform Linda Clarke if you expect to attend, preferably by email (please also let me know if you subsequently need to cancel).
