RGLGS is proud to present this expert panel bridging academia and advocacy that will examine the dramatic developments around LGBT rights in recent years. Fuelled by anti-imperialist rhetoric and religious zeal, new and draconian penalties can be contrasted with unprecedented advances towards equality in battles over politics and culture in different parts of the world. What are the strategic implications of these different trajectories? How can advocates work to advance SOGI rights without reinforcing the accusation that they are a western preoccupation? What do these developments say about the relationship between different human rights, changing gender relations and the limits/power of International Law in the context of post-colonial governance, resurgent religious extremism, and economic globalization?
