Whether you’re starting at Westminster this September or returning to your studies, our Academic English modules can help you develop the skills and confidence you need to succeed.
Through practical, interactive sessions, you can develop your academic writing, critical reading and thinking, use of sources, presentations and academic communication, while also learning how to use Generative AI critically and responsibly to support your studies.
For undergraduate students (Level 4):
We offer two one-semester modules:
- Academic English for Disciplinary Study (4ALDS001W)
Develop your academic reading and writing, critical analysis, use of sources, academic voice and presentation skills.
- Academic Spoken Communication Skills for International Students (4ESOL001W)
Develop your confidence in academic speaking, including seminars, discussions and presentations.
Depending on your course, you may be able to take Academic English as a 20-credit option module or as an additional non-credit-bearing support module.

For postgraduate students:
We offer:
- Academic English for Postgraduate Study (0ALDS001W)
This is a 10-week, non-credit-bearing support module designed to help you succeed at postgraduate level.
Develop your critical reading and writing, academic voice, understanding of different assessment genres, presentation skills and dissertation planning, while learning how to use GenAI effectively and responsibly.
Choose from face-to-face or live online classes.
Attend at least 7 of the 10 sessions to receive points towards the Westminster Award and a Certificate of Attendance.

How can you enrol?
If you are an undergraduate student, you can check whether the Academic English modules are available as a 20-credit option on your course. If you would like to take Academic English as additional support, please contact the Academic English team at [email protected].
